What this site is

Deposit Defense publishes general information about state security-deposit laws, quoted from and linked to the statute text itself, plus two free self-service tools: a deadline calculator and a move-in photo documentation tool. By using this site, you agree to these terms.

This is not legal advice

Nothing on this site is legal advice, and using it does not create an attorney-client relationship between you and Deposit Defense or anyone associated with it. We are not a law firm, and no one who works on this site is acting as your lawyer. The calculator applies statute text to the dates and facts you enter and shows you the arithmetic result - it is general information about what the law says, not a determination of your legal rights or a recommendation about what to do. Laws change, local ordinances can override state rules, and the specific facts of your tenancy matter in ways a calculator cannot fully account for. Before you rely on anything here to make a decision, verify it against the current statute or talk to a licensed attorney or a local legal aid office.

No warranty of accuracy

We make a real effort to keep the legal information on this site accurate and current - every fact is checked against the statute text and, where possible, a second source, and each state page shows when it was last reviewed. Even so, this site is provided "as is," without any warranty that the information is complete, current, or error-free. Statutes get amended, and a page can lag behind a recent change. If something here materially affects a decision you're making, confirm it independently before you act on it.

The calculator and documentation tool

Both tools run entirely in your browser. The calculator does date arithmetic based on what you enter and shows you the statute that applies to the result; it does not access, store, or transmit your inputs anywhere (see our Privacy Policy for how we verified that). The documentation tool lets you assemble photos into a PDF locally on your device; we never receive or store your photos or the files you export. Because these tools are entirely under your control, you are responsible for reviewing and safeguarding anything you create with them.

Affiliate relationship

Some pages link to Rocket Lawyer's paid demand-letter tool through an affiliate program (Sovrn Commerce). We may earn a commission if you make a purchase through that link, at no extra cost to you. That link is disclosed where it appears, and using it - or not - is entirely your choice; we don't receive any commission or benefit from the /check/ calculator's informational output itself, only from a completed purchase through the linked third-party tool.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Deposit Defense and anyone who works on it are not liable for any damages - direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential - arising from your use of this site, its content, or its tools, including decisions made in reliance on information found here. This site does not guarantee any particular outcome from a security deposit dispute.

Changes

We may update these terms or the site's content at any time; continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles.
